“I’M hungry!” seems to be the soundtrack of the school hols.

Your shopping bill is bound to creep up — but snacking and saving can go hand in hand.

Smart planning and portioning is the key to feeding everyone on the cheap.

HEALTHY START: Pre-cut fruit is far more expensive. Buy whole fruit, cut it into small pieces and portion out.

Grabbing supermarkets’ special offers is the way to fill your fruit bowl.

Tangerines at Lidl are just 89p for 600g this week. As part of Tesco’s “Fresh 5” offer, a punnet of plums is just 49p with a Clubcard.

BULK SNACKS: Individual packets of chocolate and crisps are not great value.

Buy a larger sharing-size pack and divide into smaller portions. Do this in one go after your weekly food shop and pop into containers.

Asda has rolled back four reusable George Home mini food storage pots to 80p, down from £1.

MEAL PLANNING: This is the best way to save. But if you find it a hassle, take advantage of the tools available.

Head to nhs.uk/change4life for planners and tips or go to the meal planning section of asda.com.

Find downloadable, colourful options at bit.ly/2Vdy6ae.

BAKE AND MAKE: Keep basics such as sugar, milk, flour and eggs in the cupboard along with dried fruit, chocolate chips or vanilla essence.

Then you can make your own muffins, scones or pound cake to add to lunchboxes.

With tinned fruit, you can create upside-down cakes, while pre-rolled pastry can be turned into tarts or cinnamon buns.

LIVELY LEFTOVERS: Chop spare wraps or pitta bread into triangles and bake with salt for tortilla chips.

A tin of drained chickpeas can be roasted with some oil and salt for a crunchy snack, too.

Sliced thinly, leftover veg can be turned into veggie crisps. Leftover yoghurt and fruit bits can be poured into lolly moulds.
