But there are cost-cutting steps you can take, such as car-pooling and sharing lifts.

ASK AROUND: Need to find someone to car-pool with? Place an advert on a noticeboard at work or on your workplace intranet.

TRAVEL SMART: Take care to find a suitable car share. Check you get along. Make sure you are travelling with someone trustworthy. Safety is paramount.

MORE THE MERRIER: The more passengers you can get, the greater the saving. You could use journeyprice.co.uk to work out the cost of your journey by car. The site estimates a 50-mile return trip to work would cost around £8. Split the cost with one passenger and you will each pay £4. Find three passengers, and you each pay just £2.

Save: £6 on a 50-mile journey

FIND RIDES ONLINE: Check out net-working websites such as liftshare.com, gocarshare.com and blablacar.co.uk where you can advertise a spare seat in your car or search for a driver offering a space in theirs.
Current ads on blablacar.co.uk include London to Manchester for just £14. Make the journey alone, and this could cost you £45.

Save: £31

SEEK OUT CHEAP FUEL: Find the cheapest place to fill up locally by visiting petrolprices.com. While unleaded can currently cost as much as 140.22p per litre, a search for the cheapest unleaded within five miles of my postcode earlier this week found a nearby Asda selling it for 135.7p/litre.

Save: Almost 5p per litre

BUDDY UP: Technician Nick Flaxman says: “I share my car journey from Norwich city centre to my workplace on the outskirts of the city with a colleague. We take it in turns to drive.

“Sharing the journey in this way means we don’t have to worry about exchanging cash, but are able to halve our petrol costs.”
