EVERYONE knows Super Mario’s iconic catchphrase but have we been saying it wrong this whole time?
The famous Nintendo mascot is believed to say “it’s a me Mario” with people quoting the line for decades – but according to a new theory the people have been hearing it incorrectly.

As Nintendo is a Japanese company and Super Mario a Japanese game some crafty influencers have figured out that the plumber’s phrase isn’t as we thought.
Instead of “it’s a me” people are speculating that “Itsumi” is actually the real word he says.
In Japanese, Itsumi roughly translates to “superb” or “great” – meaning the legendary character is simply shouting out Super Mario.
An Instagram post that has over 13million views has fans baffled by the real meaning of the Italian’s catchphrase.

Theberardo posted a clip of him telling his friend about the miraculous discovery – and it left fans divided in the comments.
One said: “So it’s been a double entendre the whole time.”
While another commented: “Wow it must’ve been a pun.”
Although a lot of the 1,800 comments were not having any of it.

And they were right as the influencer later cleared up the speculation.
He said: “It appears the video I got this info from was incorrect.
“Even tho this urban legend has been floating around for a minute, this was my attempt at a joke.”
Responding to those who got mad at him and accused him of lying for views and interactions he simply replied: “This ain’t a serious topic friends.”
To clear things up, the word Itsumi in Japanese is actually only used as a surname not as an ordinary word.

Some other popular theories have suggested that Itsumi is actually the surname of Mario and his brother Luigi to keep the catchphrase confusion alive.
But back in 2015 this was also proved wrong as the video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto proudly declared the brother’s surname is simply Mario.
Therefore the lovable duo are slightly confusingly named Luigi Mario and Mario Mario.
Mario has been back in the news lately as a new game is set to be released.
Mario Party 3 is launched October 27, 2023, on Nintendo Switch Online’s higher tier.
As an N64 game, it’s only available for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, but if you are a member of this tier, you can play completely free.
Mario Party is a long running series where you play with up to four people as various Mario characters on a giant board game.
