Over the course of a year, the extra cost for a typical shop works out at £180 compared with 12 months ago.

The prices of beef, crisps and skincare all shot up in the final quarter of 2021, consultancy firm Kantar said.

Beef alone rose by 12 per cent year-on-year.

A spokesman said: “We saw prices rise faster for a short while in spring 2020 when promotions were cut to maintain product availability, but before that you would have to go back nearly four years to January 2018 to see inflation running higher.”

Inflation is set to climb further to six or seven per cent in coming months as energy costs surge.

Experts predict bills will rise by £600 when the price cap is reviewed in April.
