Online outage tracker Down Detector logged thousands of complaints from around the world.

Most of the reports suggested that there was an issue with both the Facebook News Feed and the app.

A huge spike in complaints was tracked, beginning at around 7am London time / 2am New York time.

Facebook told The Sun: “Earlier today, a configuration change caused some people to have trouble with their Facebook Feed.

“We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Users reported seeing strange posts in their News Feed, although Facebook hasn’t publicly confirmed an issue.

The Sun was able to confirm that some users were experiencing a strange flurry of unrelated posts from unfollowed celebrity accounts and pages.

Social media analyst and industry guru Matt Navarra tweeted: “Facebook has been hit by a major spam attack.”

“Lots of Facebook Pages of celebrities have had spammy memes posted to them in the last 24 hours,” the consultant wrote.

He added in a later tweet: “Update: Some are suggesting it’s actually a Facebook feed glitch causing these posts to fill users’ feeds.”

Meta – which owns Facebook – confirmed that the issue is now resolved.

But frustrated users spent the morning flocking to Twitter to moan about the outage.

One wrote: “Is FB melting down for everyone tonight?”

Another said: “Had to come to Twitter today cause Facebook down and I’m just seeing random posts.”

And one added: “What’s happening with Facebook? The feed is hilarious? Did you see it?”

In Facebook feeds seen by The Sun, posts sent to celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift and Bear Grylls were appearing.

“I didn’t realise how many…weirdos there are who have nothing better to do that they have to surrender to posting random s*** to celeb pages on Facebook,” said one user.

“This glitch is something else.”

Another said: “Major glitch on Facebook…loads of celebrity posts!!!

“Messed up my timeline. What the hell is happening?”

Many users on Twitter have reported similar issues.

Some Facebook users feared that the app – or their own accounts – was being hacked.

One worried user asked: “Anybody else got a Facebook feed full of messages to celebs and bands or have I been hacked?”

Another said: “Did Facebook just get hacked?”
