THE ESA has canceled E3 2022, and with it, any hope fans had of seeing updates on their favorite video games.

E3 – the largest annual showcase for the video game industry – is not happening this year, in either physical or digital format, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) said on Thursday.

The ESA's annual E3 showcase is canceled again in 2022.

“We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19,” the ESA’s statement read.

“Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022,” the statement continued.

Typically, the event draws more than 66,000 attendees and over 200 exhibitors to its Los Angeles venue.

However, due to COVID-19, the showcase has experienced a rough few years – it was canceled in 2020 and took place only virtually in 2021.

The shock announcement left fans disappointed, especially those who were looking forward to catching a glimpse of the new Super Mario movie trailer.

Currently, the Universal Picture film is untitled but expected to be released on December 21, 2022.

Mario fans quickly took to social media to express their dismay.

“Fans: Well we’re obviously getting the Mario Movie Trailer at E3 this year you guys! E3: *Gets canceled, maybe forever*,” one user tweeted, following their sentiment with a sad SpongeBob GIF.

“RIP E3 Where will they announce the Mario movie trailer now,” a second user tweeted.

“You’re Kidding Me! ANOTHER YEAR OF NO E3?!? Now When Will It Be A Good Time To See The Mario Movie In Action For The First Time?!?,” a third frustrated user said.

Despite this year’s setback, the association noted that the popular event will return in 2023 with a “reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations.”

The ESA added that they will “devote all [their] energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.”

“The 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience,” the ESA’s statement concluded.
