British values | Guardian readers | Boxing | Line of Duty | Hugging

I would like to know what that oft-quoted phrase “British values” means. I always thought it was something to do with honesty, integrity and probity, but it seems that it is possible to occupy an important position in this country without any of these qualities.

• At least Jane Giddens received a Conservative party leaflet (Letters, 3 May). Seeing me entering the house carrying a copy of the Guardian, our Tory canvasser muttered: “No point asking for your support then.” Unfortunately, I doubt if he is right in all cases.
