Twitter user Pranay Pathole prompted the conversation, which revealed Musk’s thoughts on the matter.

“Would you consider building a new social media platform,
@elonmusk?,” he tweeted.

“One that would consist an open source algorithm, one where free speech and adhering to free speech is given top priority, one where propaganda is very minimal. I think that kind of a platform is needed.”

Musk responded: “Am giving serious thought to this.”

Earlier today, Musk asked Twitter users if a new platform is needed.

This tweet was a continuation of the debate he has ignited in recent days over social media platforms and free speech.

On March 25, he posted a poll to his Twitter account, asking users of the app a question about free speech.

“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?,” Musk asked, providing users the option to answer yes or no.

The answer was an overwhelming, with 70.4% of users responding “no.”

More than 2million people responded to the poll.

Musk followed up with another tweet, encouraging folks to “please vote carefully.”

“The consequences of this poll will be important.”

He again followed up after the poll closed, insinuating that something should be done.

“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?,” he asked Twitter users.

Numerous people responded asking Musk to buy the app.

On March 24, Musk posted another poll, asking users if they believe Twitter’s algorithm should be open source.

In that instance, 82.7% of users responded “yes.”
