ELON Musk has plans to build an underground public transportation system in the city of Miami.

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has submitted paperwork to build a 6.2 mile-long tunnel in Miami, Florida, according to an exclusive Business Insider report.

The tunnel would be part of “an all-electric, zero-emissions” transportation system used to ferry passengers between seven underground stations in the North Miami Beach area.

The route would go along State Road 826, between the Golden Glades Transit Center and Sunny Isles Beach, according to Insider.

The Loop system would utilize Tesla vehicles only to carry more than 7,500 passengers per hour (to start) from point A to B with zero stops.

The estimated cost of the project has been identified as somewhere between $185 million to $220 million, per The Boring Company’s proposal.

The project, if approved, could be completed in less than three years using a construction tool called Prufrock, which is “designed to tunnel at a speed of 1 mile per week,” according to The Boring Company’s website.

“We have a lot of traffic congestion and this would be a way of alleviating a great deal of that traffic,” North Miami Beach commissioner Michael Joseph told Insider.

He added that the estimated cost per mile of the Loop would be “a fraction of what is seen in other types of mass transit projects proposed in South Florida, while the construction would not be as disruptive to the local economy.”

Joseph said that the city of Miami is currently trying to obtain funding for the Loop and that they have been in discussion with The Boring Company since at least March 2021.

The North Miami Beach Loop is not The Boring Company’s first tunnel system – they have also opened two Loop systems in Las Vegas and California.

The company has stated on its webpage that some of the main goals of its tunnel systems are to tackle traffic and congestion in an “economically viable way.”

The company added that tunnels also minimize the usage surface area and “could allow us to repurpose roads into community-enhancing spaces, and beautify our cities.”
