The last week of the year will be quiet on the economic data front, with major financial markets closed on Friday for New Year’s Day.

WEDNESDAY

The National Association of Realtors releases pending home sales data for November. While the housing market was a strong spot for the economy in the spring and summer, pending home sales dropped in October and are expected to fall again in November, by 0.3% from the prior month, amid rising home prices and low inventory.

THURSDAY

Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal are expecting weekly jobless claims to have risen in the week ended Dec. 26. New claims for unemployment insurance are seen increasing to 835,000 from 803,000 the week prior, as a surge of coronavirus cases across the U.S. has prompted some states to impose new restrictions on businesses.
