Energy costs will jump from April when the price cap rises

Energy bills have rocketed and are set to rise by £693 a year for the average household when the energy price cap goes up in April.

You can cut costs by turning your thermostat down by just one degree, and you’re unlikely to notice a huge change in temperature.

According to Which? it could save you between £80 to £85 a year.

The exact amount will depend on what tariff you’re on and how energy efficient your home is.

Which? said “one of the simplest ways to save money on energy bills is by turning down the thermostat”.

You should always adjust your central heating timers so you don’t waste energy at night, or when you’re out of the house, too.

Consider turning radiators off in rooms you don’t use very often, as this can also help reduce your energy bills.

Another trick you could try is using a portable electric heater to direct the warmth directly at you instead of targeting the whole house.

Or you could simply layer up and put on another jumper rather than cranking up the central heating.

Buying a cheap draught excluder can help trap warm air in your home, reducing the need to put the heating on.

Using energy efficient appliances can shave money off your annual bill, and making sure your home is well insulated will help retain heat.

The Which? research also found that turning off electronics that you usually leave on standby can save £55 a year in a typical home.
