Setback: Delivery app Getir said it would be calling it quits in Britain as well as in the US, Germany and the Netherlands

Food delivery app Getir is pulling out of the UK in a major setback for the online grocery industry.

The Turkish tech firm, which also owns app Gorillas, said it would be calling it quits in Britain as well as in the US, Germany and the Netherlands.

The move will put 1,500 UK jobs at risk, including warehouse staff, managers and riders. Getir, founded in 2015, said it would be focusing on its Turkish business as it tries to shore up its finances.

But its exit from the UK, where it launched three years ago, is a dramatic fall from grace for Getir, which offers rapid delivery of groceries.

At its peak in 2022, the group was valued at as much as £9.6billion and was a major rival to the likes of Deliveroo.

It also snapped up struggling rival German brand Gorillas in the same year. But as interest rates soared, the firm has struggled to keep up momentum.

‘Getir expresses its sincere appreciation for the dedication and hard work of all its employees in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the US,’ the company said.
