Shoppers have expressed deep concern over the closure stating that they fear the area will become a “ghost town”.

Unfortunately, the store survived just two years after opening in February 2021.

Shoppers spotted signs on the shop windows announcing a closing-down sale where customers could get 20% off everything in-store.

Staff at Poundstretcher announced the closure and the closing down sale on their Facebook page.

The store said: “Evening everyone. Poundstretcher Ammanford now has a closing down Sale.”

“We have 20% off EVERYTHING so call in and make sure you do because once it’s gone it’s gone!”

The post racked up over 18 likes and though comments have been limited it has been shared over 106t times by concerned residents.

One user said: “Great even more places closing down. More jobless. The economy is f**ked.”

Another said: “I had a feeling it would.”

“Ghost town before long,” claimed a third.

Many shoppers were speculating as to what retailer may be best placed to take over the former Poundstretcher store.

One user said: “Hopefully they change it to a Primark.”

“I think it would be good as a Harvester,” said someone else.

A third user said: “A good space for a TK Maxx there.”

Adam Price MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, told local media he too was concerned about the news.

He said: “I was deeply concerned to learn that the Poundstretcher store in Ammanford will be closing. I understand that there are many pressures affecting businesses at the moment, but this will come as a major blow to staff.

“Redundancies such as this are never good news, but to come just before the Christmas period will be particularly difficult for staff. I hope that there is an alternative found soon so that staff can be sure of their future.”

The news follows a string of other store closures already announced by the high street retailer.

The discount retailer confirmed it is closing down two of its high street locations, Watford Road, Cotteridge and the Wealdstone branch in Harrow.

Another five Poundstretcher stores were closed earlier this year but in February the retailer revealed plans to open 50 new stores by the of the year.

It has been a tough time for high street retailers.

More shoppers than ever are ordering online and energy costs have risen which has left some retailers grappling with budgets.

It has led to several high street retailers closing stores as they try to cut costs.

Some have gone bust completely too, including Paperchase, Wilko, Cath Kidston and M&Co.

Boots revealed it would be closing 300 stores over the next year as part of plans to evolve its brand

B&M has closed nine of its stores since February this year.

Clintons brought in advisers in August to put a plan in place to save it from insolvency.

The card retailer plans to close 38 of its 225 stores to try to stay afloat.

Even Tesco announced it will be closing a store this week.

The Mount Plesant Tesco Express in Liverpool will be permanently closing on November 15.
