IT’S the meal we all look forward to, but the cost of Christmas dinner always mounts up.

It is not unusual for families to spend up to £100 on a big festive blow-out, with turkey, trimmings and tipples aplenty.

But don’t make a meal out of finding savings. Cut costs with our handy tips…

SIZE MATTERS: Consider a crown or joint instead of the whole bird, and frozen is usually cheaper than fresh. Aldi has come up trumps in this year’s supermarket turkey price war, with fresh birds available for just £6.90 (£3.45 per kg). Or you can buy a frozen one from only £2.43 per kg. Farmfoods sells large ready-basted whole turkeys from £2.40 a kg, extra large options from £2.22 per kg.

NICE PRICE: Festive veg staples from both Aldi and Lidl are just 19p from today. Aldi’s price applies to its Christmas Super Six, including 1kg carrots, 2kg white potatoes, 500g parsnips, 500g Brussels sprouts, red or white cabbage, and swede.

GO ROGUE: Try Christmas dinner on a pizza. Domino’s sells The Festive One from £19.99 for a large. It’s topped with sage and onion turkey, Cumberland sausage and crispy bacon. A small number of stores will even be open on Christmas Day.

TOP TIPPLE: Need a selection of drinks? Get 12 bottles at £5.42 each, a free bottle of Prosecco, four Dartington glasses and delivery, all for £65 with Laithwaites. You need to cancel your plan if you don’t want future boxes. Visit laithwaites.co.uk.

SAVE: £110.87

BRAND BUSTER: For extras, such as condiments, look at supermarket own brands to beat Christmas dinner inflation. Ocean Spray cranberry sauce is £1 at Asda, but the shop’s own brand is just 50p. The supermarket also has a two for £2 mix and match promotion for its Extra Special range of sauces, chutneys, gravy granules and stuffing mixes.
