WORKERS who make Jacob’s Cream Crackers and Twiglets say they are going on strike “indefinitely” – raising fears of shortages on shop shelves.

Over 750 staff at Jacob’s Bakery factory will walk out today and continue “every single day” until bosses agree to negotiate better pay.

Eamon O’Hearn, National officer at The GMB union, who issued the threats, told The Mirror workers “are rightly angry”.

He added: “They put themselves on the line to keep the company going during the pandemic.

“Now they need some help to get them through the cost-of-living crisis, but it’s falling on deaf ears.”

A row over pay has raged for more than a year, with The GMB demanding a 10 percent pay hike for staff.

Such a rise would meet inflation which is running at 10.1 percent.

But the firm said such a rise was unaffordable and offered 4.25 percent hike, rejected by staff who went crackers at the offer.

Another total 8.9% pay rise over two years was also offered along with a £500 cost of living payment.

Pladis Global said in a statement: “We regret that the GMB has decided to take this course of action, despite all of the efforts we have made to reach an agreement with the union.

“However, we want to reiterate that our door remains open to the GMB for further discussions with their representatives.”
