COSTCO shoppers have said the “world is ending” after a top-selling product was abruptly discontinued.

The wholesaler is known for selling everything from grocery to household items at rock-bottom prices.

But customers have been left in shock after it dropped Kirkland washing liquid from stores.

A Costco spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment, but staff at two stores said the item had in fact been discontinued.

Posting on the Costco Wholesale UK Facebook page, one disgruntled customer said they had spotted the product missing from their branch in Leeds.

They said: “Went to Leeds last night to get Kirkland washing liquid and was non (sic).

“Asked about it and was told it’s been discontinued and they can’t understand it either as it’s the most popular seller.

“Think we all need to email Costco to complain. Gutted as I love the stuff.”

The post has received a number of comments from fellow shoppers equally disappointed the washing liquid has been shelved.

One said: “Yep the world is ending – it’s the only one I can use, that actually cleans laundry.”

Meanwhile, another added: “Omg no washing liquid.”

Costco isn’t the only retailer to drop an item from its shelves in recent months.

Retailers regularly shake up their offering to keep stock fresh and as certain items fall out of favour with customers.

Tesco pulled six-pint bottles of milk from shelves in July, but shoppers branded the decision an “udder” disgrace.

In December, Waitrose stopped selling single-use vaping products including two types of e-cigarettes.

The posh retailer said it had made the move due to concerns over the “health of young people”.

In the same month, shoppers were left unable to get several flavours of Lucozade at supermarkets following issues with its bottle supplier.

This month, fans have been left buzzing after one flavour made a welcome return though.

How does Costco work?

Costco works on a membership basis unlike most traditional retailers, meaning you have to pay a fee.

But how much you pay depends on your circumstances.

There are five different packages available on the Costco website, with prices starting from £15 and going all the way up to £74.40.

The £15 package is for online shopping only and comes with free technical support.

Meanwhile, the £74.40 “Individual Executive” bundle comes with a free card for your spouse or partner and extra benefits on selected
Costco Services.

You can sign up on Costco’s website and add the membership type you want to your cart.

Your membership should then activate after 12 hours.

If you are planning an in-store visit straight away, you should take a form of ID and your membership confirmation with you to be allowed in.
