SUPERMARKETS and cinema chains are among the retailers that will be closing their doors on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
The longest-reigning British monarch died on Thursday at the age of 96.

Her Majesty’s state funeral has been declared a bank holiday and several major retailers and businesses have also decided to close, out of respect.
We list all the stores and businesses that will be closing their doors on Monday, September 19, or will be reducing their hours.
Supermarkets
Tesco
Tesco is to close all of its large stores on Monday in order for its staff to pay their respects.
The supermarket giant said its express stores will be open until 5pm except for a small number of Express stores in Central London and Windsor that will be open throughout the day.
A spokesman said: “We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service.”
The company also said it would not be fulfilling online orders either.
A company spokesperson said: “If customers have a slot booked on that day, they will be contacted to confirm the cancellation and will need to re-book a slot for another day.”
Asda
Asda is to close all its stores from midnight on Sunday, September 18, to 5pm on Monday – reopening after the funeral service.
A spokesman said staff contracted to work while the stores are closed will receive their normal pay.
Those who work when the stores reopen, will be paid double time for the rest of the day.
The supermarket giant is also pausing its delivery services.
The spokesman added: “As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, all Asda stores will be closed on Monday, September 19, until 5pm to allow our customers and colleagues to recognise the passing of our late Monarch and commemorate her steadfast service to our nation.”
Aldi
Aldi will shut all its UK stores to customers on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
The budget supermarket posted on its Twitter page this afternoon to let customers know that stores would be shut.
The post read: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – As a mark of respect, all Aldi stores across the UK will close on Monday, September 19 to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen.”
Lidl
Lidl has confirmed that, as a mark of respect, it will close all its stores across England, Scotland and Wales on the day of the funeral.
A spokesman said: “We are grateful to all Lidl customers for their understanding and will be keeping all who mourn Her Royal Highness in our thoughts during this time.”
Co-op
Co-op is to close its stores until 5pm on Monday, September 19.

They will the reopen to customers following the funeral service.
Deliveries will also resume after 5pm.
A number of stores within central London and towards Windsor will remain open during the day to serve customers who will be in the Capital to be part of the funeral.
Morrisons
All Morrisons supermarkets will be closed on Monday, as a mark of respect and delivery services will also be stopped.
Morrisons said it wanted its staff to be able to pay tribute to Her Majesty.
At 5pm it will reopen its petrol filling stations.
Iceland
Iceland, which has more than 1,000 across the UK, said it will close on September 10.
A spokesman said: “As a mark of respect to Her Majesty The Queen and to allow its colleagues to mourn in their own way, Iceland has made the decision to close all of its stores.”
Morrisons
Morrisons are finalising details to close their stores or reduce opening hours, sources told The Sun.
Sainsbury’s and Argos
Sainsbury’s and Argos will shut all its UK stores to customers on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
A spokesman said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday, 19th September. “
This will also include groceries online and Argos fast track delivery.
Sainsbury’s said its convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items.
Select stores in central London will also be open to serve those attending the funeral in person.
Other retailers
Amazon
The world’s biggest company and delivery service is cancelling deliveries on Monday.
A company spokesperson said: “All deliveries to customers will be paused for the duration of the funeral ceremony.”
Zara
Zara will close all its stores as a mark of respect on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
The brand has more than 60 shops across the UK.
Next
The high street retailer, which has 510 stores in the UK, said: “In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all stores will be closed on Monday, 19 September.”
Primark
Primark will close all its shops next Monday for the Queen’s funeral.
All of the high street giant’s 191 stores will be closed on Monday, September 19, as a mark of respect.
Poundland
All 770 Poundland stores will shut to customers on Monday.
It means staff of both retailers will be able to watch the Queen’s funeral on television.
A spokesperson for Poundland said: “We know how important it is that colleagues have the opportunity to join with their families and pay their respects on the day the funeral takes place.
“Any colleagues who were scheduled to work on 19 September, will receive their scheduled pay in full.”
Marks and Spencer
Marks & Spencer is to close all of its store and pause its delivery services.
A small number of stores open in the London area will remain open so mourners in the capital can grab a drink or a bite to eat.
Stuart Machin, CEO of M&S said: “All of us at M&S – and indeed across the country and beyond – feel a real and deep sense of loss and sadness at the passing of Her Majesty, as well as huge respect for the grace with which His Majesty King Charles III and the wider Royal Family have led the nation in our mourning.”
John Lewis and Waitrose
The John Lewis Partnership said it will shut John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets all day for the funeral.
Andrew Murphy, chief operating officer of The John Lewis Partnership, said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
“We will be closing our stores on the day of her funeral as a mark of respect, and because we believe this is the right thing to do for our partners and customers.”
It added there may be “a very limited number of Waitrose stores” near to the route of the funeral procession which remain open to serve members of the public nearby.
It stressed these shops would close during the funeral itself.
B&Q
Hardware giant B&Q is also closing all of its store.
A B&Q spokesperson said: “As a mark of respect for the State Funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to offer our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects, we have taken the decision to close all our UK stores on Monday 19 September.
“Our click and collect and home delivery services will also be temporarily suspended on the day.”
Dunelm
Dunelm will be closing its stores as well as pausing delivery, click and collect and customer services on the day of the funeral.
It will reopen all shops the following day.
IKEA
Ikea said it is closing all of its store on Monday “out of respect for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
It said it made the decision to allow its worker to pay their respects.
Kwik Fit
Car servicing and repair company Kwik Fit have announced that its centres will be closed on Monday as the nation marks the passing of the Queen.
Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, said: “While we usually remain open on most bank holidays, these are unique circumstances.
“We are closing to enable all our colleagues to join their family and friends in paying their final respects as Her Majesty is laid to rest.”
Kwik Fit said it will reopen with normal opening times on Tuesday, September 20.
ASOS
The online retailer said customer deliveries would be paused out of respect for the Queen’s funeral.
A company spokesperson said: “ASOS will operate its usual bank holiday plan on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
“The majority of ASOS staff will not be working and our carrier partners will not be delivering – customer delivery schedules will be updated accordingly.”
Halfords
Halfords will close on Monday as a mark of respect.
All of its stores, garages and support centres will be closed, and its team of Halfords Mobile Experts will also not be operating.
A spokesman said any customers with booked appointments in our stores, Autocentres or with National Tyres will be contacted to re-arrange.
Branches will be open as usual on Tuesday, September 20.
Toolstation
Toolstation have now also confirmed they will be closing all 556 stores across the UK.
A spokesman said: “As a mark of respect for the life of service and leadership of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Toolstation has decided that its stores in the United Kingdom will close all day on Monday 19 September to coincide with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral.”
They will re-open for business on Tuesday 20 September.”
Ocado
Ocado shoppers will not receive shopping orders on Monday, September 19.
A spokesperson for Ocado said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
“As a mark of respect, Ocado will be closed for deliveries on 19th September so all our colleagues can pay their respects on this day of national mourning.
“We are contacting everyone with an order booked for Monday to rearrange their delivery and we’d like to thank customers for their understanding.”
Wilko
Wilko will be closing its 400 stores in the UK as a mark of respect.
Jerome Saint-Marc, wilko CEO, said: “The whole wilko family continues to mourn the loss of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
“As a mark of respect, we will be closing our stores all day on Monday 19th September so that team members can commemorate the life and service of Her Majesty with their families.”
Costa Coffee
Costa Coffee said all “wholly owned” stores will close next Monday.
Some stores operated by partners will remain open, like in hospitals.
Greggs
The bakery chain has announced it will be closing its doors to customers on Monday.
A spokesperson for the company said: “To give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Greggs shops will be closed on Monday 19th September.
“A small number of our shops, operated by our franchise partners, may remain open.”
McDonald’s
The fast food giant said all its restaurants will close until 5pm on the day of the funeral.
The burger chain announced the news on Twitter.
It said: “In honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and to enable everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects, our restaurants across the UK will be closed until midnight until 5pm on Monday September 19.”
Pets at Home
All Pets at Home stores and groom salons will be closed next Monday.
However, some vet practices will remain open.
A company spokesperson said to check your nearest practice to find out if it will be open.
Currys
Currys will close all day, as a mark of our respect for the Queen’s 70 years of service,.
UK stores will be closed all day, and delivery services will be paused for the day.
lex Baldock, chief executive of Currys said: “I will be joining our colleagues and the millions of people around the world in saying a final thank you to her.”
JD Sports
All 399 JD Sports stores will shut on Monday, September 19.
The closures will affect all 322 stores in England, 38 in Scotland, 20 in Wales and 17 in Northern Ireland.
Holland & Barrett
Holland & Barrett is closing all UK stores to its customers on Monday, September 19 for the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Harvey Bennett, customer managing director at Holland & Barrett said: “All of us at H&B join the country in mourning for HM Queen Elizabeth, and we offer our deepest condolences to her family.
“We are closing our stores to enable our customers and colleagues to join their families and local communities in memory of the Queen’s incredible 70 years of service.”
Cinema chains
Major chains including Cineworld, Odeon and Showcase cinemas will not open cinemas on Monday in a mark of respect for the Queen.
Smaller operators including The Light – which has movie theatres in locations such as Cambridge, Sheffield and Stockport – will also close their doors for the day.
Other cinema chains including Curzon and Arc have chosen to screen the funeral for free while cancelling the rest of their programming that day.
What other businesses and services will be closed on the Queen’s funeral?
You might not be able to visit your GP on the day of the Queen’s funeral.
NHS England has said GP surgeries in England will be able to close their doors, providing there is enough out-of-hours care to support the local community.
Some hospitals will continue to run normally over the Bank Holiday, while others have postponed some non-urgent appointments.
Some councils will pause bin collections as a mark of respect on the day.
Dorset, North East Derbyshire and the Royal Borough of Greenwich are among a number of areas who have confirmed bin collections won’t happen.

The Royal Mail will suspend post delivery on the day of the funeral as well.
Some hotels and leisure sites have announced they will close.
Center Parcs said it would close, but has since backtracked on its decision.
It means families won’t have to leave or end their holiday early at the company’s five parks on the day of the Queen’s funeral.
You won’t be able to do your driving test if it’s been scheduled on the day of the funeral.
Instead, you’ll be contacted to reschedule your test.
Were shops closed the day after the Queen died?
Shops did not have to close, but some chose to do so out of respect.
Some retailers operated on reduced hours too.
Selfridges closed its stores in London, Manchester and Birmingham on Friday but reopened them for the weekend.
French Connection, which runs 26 shops across the UK, also closed their stores on Friday following the death of the Queen.
A spokesman said: “Following the sad news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we will close the doors of all our French Connection stores on Friday September 9.
“Our thoughts are with the royal family at this time.”
Historic London department store Liberty was among the first to confirm it would not open on Friday.
The Soho-based retailer said: “Our heartfelt sympathy and thoughts are with the royal family at this sad time.”
Liberty stores reopened again on Saturday.
But most other high street retailers are operating as normal.
The national mourning guidance, published on Friday, highlights that firms are not expected to halt operations.
It says: “There is no obligation on organisations to suspend business during the national mourning period.
“Depending on the nature and location of their business and the tone of planned events, some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the state funeral, however this is at the discretion of individual businesses.”
