THE cost of a Christmas dinner is the cheapest it’s been in five years as supermarkets slash prices in a battle to win over customers.

The latest research shows you can feed eight people for £21.72 this year – costing just £2.71 per guest.

If you buy the cheapest possible options for 11 Christmas dinner items – including turkey and all the trimmings – it will be 5p cheaper than 2020.

Supermarkets are lowering prices to compete for shoppers – Lidl kicked off the price war by slashing the cost of veggies to just 19p per bag.

Good Housekeeping added up the cheapest 11 festive foods across the UK’s major supermarkets.

But it didn’t share details of which supermarkets were selling the bargain items this year.

We’ve asked for more details and we will update this article when we have that information.

Six of the Christmas staples – sprouts, carrots, parsnips, stuffing, Christmas pudding and mince pies – are cheaper this year.

Mince pies saw the biggest price drop – the cost of a pack of eight this year fell by 52p compared to 2020.

The cheapest Brussel sprouts are also 32p less this year.

Meanwhile, the cheapest price for potatoes, cranberry sauce, Christmas cake and brandy butter has remained the same.

The only item that is more expensive, turkey, has gone up by just 1p.

The research shows is the best price is you would get if shopped around at different supermarkets.

Remember, it’s based entirely on prices and not quality or taste.

Emilie Martin, Good Housekeeping consumer affairs director, said: “After a financially uncertain couple of years, and against a backdrop of rising inflation, it’s encouraging to know that it’s possible to spend less on Christmas dinner this year than you did last year.

“This is good news for anyone who’s worried about the cost of Christmas but still wants to make the festivities feel special.”

Separate research by Which? revealed that Aldi is the cheapest supermarket if you want to get all your Christmas dinner shopping in one place.

The discount grocer is offering turkey and all the trimmings for just £28.17 – or £4.70 per person for a group of six.

Another study by Kantar found that the average cost of a with a traditional dinner for four comes in at £27.48.
