From DIY cake tins to cleaning your barbecue, try these creative tricks this week.

CLEANING AID: Foil can be a handy cleaning assistant when polishing silverware.

But more importantly it’s a great way to clean oven racks.

Crumple up a piece of foil and scrub to get rid of grease or leftover food.

This also works on a barbecue grill and is a great way to eliminate tough food residue.

DECORATING TOOL: If you have leftover scraps of foil, keep them handy for the next time you are painting.

Use foil to mould around tricky areas such as door knobs or handles to protect them from unwanted splashes.

PICNIC HELPER: As the weather gets warmer you might be thinking about going on a family picnic.

Line your picnic basket with foil to keep drinks cold and salads and sandwiches cool.

PLANT PROTECTOR: If you’re planning to plant seeds on your windowsill, keep them snug and protected by adding a layer of foil around the plant pot for when it’s cooler at night.

DINNER WINNER: Make family dinner time more fun and avoid extra washing up.

Skip plates and cutlery by laying foil across your entire table and serve food directly on to it.

This works really well for messy “picky meals” such as burrito nights — pile the food up and let everyone build their own burrito at the table.

Then just roll up the foil and bin it afterwards.

BAKING SAVER: Whipping up a birthday cake soon?

Use a couple of layers of foil and mould it to create your own cake tin.

This works particularly well for cakes with difficult shapes.

And there’s also no need to buy a piping bag.

Create your own by folding foil into a triangular tube shape and cutting off the top point.
