Retail workers are in demand for the festive season when more people are hitting the shops.

Stores are expected to be open everywhere this year, after coronavirus lockdowns shuttered some shops over Christmas 2020.

That means more people will be hitting the high street as well as ordering online, despite the threat of shortages on some shelves due to ongoing supply chain issues.

Here’s where you can find work over the busy shopping season:

Aldi

Aldi is hiring 1,500 temporary staff this Christmas to work on checkouts and replenish stock.

Workers will also be picking and packing orders made through its click and collect service, which is available at around 200 of its stores.

Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: “We always need extra support over the busy Christmas period but this year especially, temporary store colleagues will play a vital role in keeping our shelves stocked as the nation prepares to reunite with their loved ones after missing out on festive celebrations in 2020.”

Store assistants are paid £10.57 per hour across the country, or £11.32 at locations within the M25.

Anyone working for the supermarket over the festive season will be given Boxing Day off.

You can find a job at Aldi, including permanent positions too at www.aldirecruitment.co.uk.

Amazon

Amazon is hiring a whopping 20,000 temporary workers over Christmas this year.

The jobs will be at fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations. Pay is £10 an hour and £11.10 in some locations.

Some locations are also offering a signing on bonus for temporary workers of up to £3,000.

The online retail giant is also looking for workers to deliver parcels to people’s doors, and these roles pay between £13 and £15 per hour.

Sainsbury’s and Argos

Sainsbury’s is creating 22,00 new temporary positions. The roles will entail serving customers, keeping shelves stocked, and picking, packing and delivering online orders.

There will be a further 3,000 online delivery driver positions and 4,500 warehouse and logistics openings, as well as 180 contact centre roles.

New drivers for Sainsbury’s will also be in for a £500 payment as an incentive for working during busy periods.

Sainsbury’s pays delivery drivers £10.25 per hour, and £9.50 per hour for shop and online assistants.

Customer assistant salaries start at £9.20 per hour and £10.25 in London and M&S staff also get 20% discount in store and online at the shop.

Christmas positions start in early December and there are a range of contract lengths available.

The retailer said there may also be opportunities for permanent positions after Christmas, but this will depend on the store.
