Fortnum & Mason said more than 6m shoppers came through its doors or shopped online over the five weeks to December 

Festive sales soared at Fortnum & Mason as a new look for its flagship store in London boosted customer numbers.

The luxury food retailer said more than 6m shoppers came through its doors or shopped online over the five weeks to December 24 – 30 per centhigher than the same period last year.

The refurbishment of its Piccadilly store created a food and drinks studio, hosting cooking classes and wine tastings.

A dazzling Christmas followed a strong year, with sales up 12 per cent to £208.6million over year to July 9. 

But boss Tom Athron warned: ‘While we continue to make good progress in growing sales, we are not immune from wider economic headwinds.’
