THE cheapest supermarket for basket of 20 essentials has been named in a price comparison league table.
Aldi has taken the crown for the month of April after narrowly beating Lidl by just 12p, according to consumer group Which?

They checked the prices of 20 food items, such as own-label eggs and raspberries as well as branded products including Chicago Town pizzas, to see how the UK’s supermarkets compared.
Which? found that shoppers would have paid £22.64, on average, at Aldi.
At the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose was priciest. It was £8.25 or 36 per cent more expensive than Aldi, at £30.89.
Waitrose usually puts its higher prices down to higher quality and welfare standards.

Which? also evaluated a bigger shopping trolley packed with 82 items.
This selection included a greater range of branded goods that aren’t always stocked in the discounter supermarkets – meaning Aldi and Lidl are not included.
Asda was the cheapest of the traditional supermarkets, at £152.67 for the trolley full of products.
And it was a whopping £20.57 cheaper than the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose, which charged 13 per cent more at £173.24.

Sainsbury’s was second-cheapest at £159.54, while Ocado was second-priciest at £170.67.
Food prices have dropped for the first time since December 2016, according to data from market research company Kantar Worldpanel
The study found that an extra £582m of groceries were sold on offer in April this year compared with last year, while grocery sales rose by 5.7 per cent.
Last year Lidl narrowly bet Aldi as the cheapest supermarket of 2020.
In total, the Lidl shopping trolley of goods came to £42.67 on average over the year.

It was only 34p cheaper than the average trolley costs at Aldi, which came in second place at £43.01.
It was the first time Which? included both Aldi and Lidl in its annual price comparison.
Asda was the third-cheapest supermarket with the same basket of items costing £48.71 on average, but it was still over £5 more than Aldi and Lidl.
