Britain’s manufacturing industry has urged ministers to stop blaming business as ‘the enemy within’. 

The comments represent a marked change in tone from Make UK, whose members include car, defence and steel manufacturers. 

The sector is being battered by rising costs for energy, shipping and parts including microchips, of which there is a shortage.

Ahead of next week’s Budget, it demanded the Government stop ‘fighting the last war’ over Brexit and develop a long-term economic plan. 

Chief executive Stephen Phipson said: ‘There is a feeling within industry that the Government sees business as the enemy within.’
