BRITS have been warned that their broadband router could stop working if they become too hot.

With the hotter days well upon us, experts say that your Wi-Fi could cut out as a result.

Catherine Hiley, telecoms expert from Uswitch.com, has revealed three crucial tips to keep your router cool.

Avoid hot spots

To prevent your router from over-heating, place it in the coolest room possible.

This is usually a central room where there are fewer windows.

Definitely keep your router away from windowsills where it’s exposed to direct sunlight.

Even in the winter months this is a bad move as it sends signal out the window, which is a waste of connection.

Ventilation

Wi-Fi routers need space to ventilate and get rid of that excess heat.

Put it on a firm, level surface away from other objects that could bock airflow.

“Routers have in-built fans that help them to cool down,” Catherine explains.

“This means they need space around them to let out the hot air caused by all the processing they need to do.

“If your router is surrounded by lots of other objects, it can’t properly ventilate and might overheat.”

Disconnect disused devices

The more devices trying to connect to your router the harder it has to work.

Turning off Wi-Fi on stuff you’re not using may help to ease the pressure during hot times.

“The more devices that are connected to your router, the harder it has to work to keep them all online, which makes it more likely to slow down or switch off,” Catherine adds.
