FAMILIES face a vegetables shortage because farmers have been hit by rocketing energy costs, industry bosses warn.

Harvests of cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, aubergines and peppers will all suffer.

Output will be slashed to less than half after glasshouse growers faced the price crunch.

They were charged 40p per therm of natural gas at the start of 2021 but that has soared to £8.

Labour shortages post-Brexit have added to the chaos.

And farmers who came from Ukraine under the seasonal workers’ visa scheme last year have not arrived due to the war.

The visa scheme — which lets in 30,000 agricultural workers — has been extended to 2024 to ease the pain.
