They found the number of people seeking a home in the Shropshire town was down 16 per cent on five years ago.

Bradford, West Yorks, was the most popular with a 98 per cent rise in demand.

Shrewsbury resident Peter Bentall, 61, loves the town.

He said: “I’ve lived here all my life and absolutely love the place – we are right next to Wales and just along the road from some of the most amazing scenery.

“The town itself is steeped in history and I really cannot imagine why people might not want to live here.”

He added: “It might be a bit boring to the younger people around here.”
