BRITAIN’S £40billion staycation summer has started with a rush for booking caravan parks, cottages and campsites.

Seven in ten properties near coasts were booked for this week, rental site Cottages.com said.

And eight in ten people will take staycations this summer, a holidaycottages.co.uk poll found.

This summer is likely to be the biggest on record for UK holidays.

Hundreds of extra pop-up campsites and glamping fields will dot the countryside to cope with demand.

But operators have been accused of raising prices.

South West Tourism Alliance chairman Alistair Handyside said: “Large agents are increasing prices dramatically for cottages.

“Doubling prices is not uncommon.”

Holiday park Haven said: “We move our prices in line with demand.”

Caravan and camping sites plus cottages and self-contained accommodation opened on Monday.

But Butlin’s and Pontins holiday camps, as well as B&Bs and hotels, must wait until May 17.
