BOXING Day bargain-hunter numbers were down on past years yesterday but average spending was up — as millions more logged in to shop from home.

Brits will each spend a record £247 in the sales compared to £162 last year and £186 pre-pandemic, experts say, as they chase deals up to 70 per cent off.

Thousands defied Covid to queue up outside stores across the UK but footfall was 35 per cent down on 2019 — and almost double that in London.

Retail parks saw shopper numbers halved.

Barclaycard reckons £2.5billion will be spent in shops and £1.4billion online.

Among those hitting shops in search of bargains was Rachel Whitenstall, 26, from Jarrow, South Tyneside.

She said: “It’s nice to see people out and about and it’s a lot better than buying online.”

In Manchester, Dare Fawale, 34, said: “Given Covid, it’s been quite busy.”
