Snubbed: Belgian insurance giant circling Direct Line has had a second offer snubbed by the Direct Line board
The Belgian insurance giant circling Direct Line has been told to abandon its ‘aggressive’ takeover of the FTSE 250 firm.
Ageas has had a second offer snubbed by the Direct Line board and a top ten shareholder wants it to quit the hunt.
The offer of 237p-a-share, or about £3.2billion, was dubbed ‘opportunistic’ by Direct Line.
The unnamed Ageas investor told Sky News the approach was ‘aggressive, unsolicited and opportunistic’. It is understood Ageas shareholders see no value in the deal.
Direct Line has brought in investment bank Robey Warshaw – which employs former chancellor George Osborne – to bolster its defences and work alongside the banking quartet of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, RBC Capital Markets and JP Morgan Cazenove.
The bankers have plenty to do as Ageas said it will continue to engage with Direct Line’s board ahead of a March 27 deadline.
Direct Line has fallen on tough times after the pandemic as high inflation has driven up claims costs. It reports 2023 results next Thursday.
