Iceland is pulling down the shutters on two supermarkets

The frozen food retailer has already shut over a dozen shops already this year including locations in Bristol and Suffolk.

Two further sites are set to close their doors on Saturday, October 28.

Its Fulford Road branch in York will pull down the shutters for the last time at 4pm.

A message to customers was sent out last month saying: “Sorry we’re closing, but if you love Iceland you’ll love the Food Warehouse.

“Your Fulford Road Iceland store is permanently closing from 4pm on Saturday 28 October.”

It added that the next nearest store will be York Foss Islands Food Warehouse.

An Iceland spokesperson confirmed the closure to The Sun, stating that it was due to the site’s lease coming to an end.

The bargain supermarket will also be closing its store on Trinity Street, Huddersfield on October 28.

A spokesperson for Iceland previously said: “The Trinity Street, Huddersfield store is due to close on October 28, we anticipate many of our customers will instead choose to shop at the nearby Food Warehouse on Great Northern Retail Park.”

The discount chain added that it has a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, including both supermarkets and Food Warehouses.

It also typically opens more than 20 new stores each year.

Iceland has shut up shop at several other locations already in 2023.

Its branches in Birkenhead and in Crewe shut their doors for good on September 16.

Its shop in Llanelli closed on September 2.

Prior to that the chain closed its supermarket in The Bridge Centre, Fratton in Portsmouth on Saturday, August 26.

Here’s the full list of Iceland supermarkets which have closed this year so far:

It is not all bad news for Iceland shoppers though as it has opened a new store in Slough and two new shops under the Food Warehouse in Kendal and Aberdeen.

The retailer has also recently announced the return of its festive savings scheme that gives an extra cash boost for its customers this year.

Last year the frozen food retailer opened 24 new Iceland stores and you can find your nearest by using the store locator on the website.

Iceland is not the only bargain retailer to close some of its stores, several others have announced closures too.

In August bargain discounter Wilko collapsed seeing hundreds of store closures and thousands of staff lose their jobs.

Closures have also affected chains including FarmfoodsCo-op and Shoezone.

Food and pub chains have also closed the doors at several locations across the country, including Wetherspoons pubs and Prezzo restaurants.
