The discount chain has stuck up posters signposting the closure around the shop in Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park.

Shoppers shared the post on social media, posting: “Poundland at Middlebrook closing down soon, proper shame.”

They shared a photo of the poster which reads: “It is with much regret that we have to announce the closure of this store on August 22.

“The staff would like to thank you all of our customers for the years of, and continued support, thank you.”

Another wrote: “It’s bad when the pound shop can’t sustain business.”

A third commented: “Saw this earlier. Crazy when even a pound shop can’t survive.”

A fourth said: “Getting beyond a joke now.”

And another wrote: “Horwich is gonna look like silent hill soon enough.”

Poundland had previously confirmed the closure to The Sun.

A spokesperson said: “Our lease has expired at Middlebrook so we’re sadly having to move out of the store.

“Obviously we’re really sorry for the inconvenience.

“Obviously it goes without saying that we’ll do all we can to look after the colleagues who work in the store.

“We’re a growing retailer, opening or relocating 50 stores in this year alone, so we will do our best to find alternatives for our colleagues.”

The bargain chain known for its low prices has already closed 11 sites in total this year.

The following have already shut their doors:

  • Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire – closed June 11
  • King’s Lynn, Norfolk – closed June 2
  • Gateshead – closed May 25
  • Festival Park, Stoke – closed May 19
  • Dewsbury – closed May 17
  • Swadlincote – closed April 25
  • Epsom – closed March 29
  • Lime Square, Openshaw – closed March 27
  • Ipswich – closed March 11
  • Southport – closed March 3
  • Walkden – closed February 28

But it is also opening new stores in the following locations next month:

  • Torquay – opens September 2
  • Ipswich – opens September 2
  • Selby – opens September 2
  • Pontefract – opens September 9
  • Cardiff – opens September 9
  • Stafford – opens September 16
  • Ryde – opens September 23

The chain has already opened dozens of new stores in the first half of this year.

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.

High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

The inability to renegotiate rents and agreements with landlords is also putting pressure on some retailers to pull out of some locations.

A number of well-known retailers including Argos, Lloyds Pharmacy and New Look have closed stores in recent months.

Bargain chains aren’t immune either, Wilko recently collapsed into administration – putting all 400 stores at risk.

Plus, supermarket chain Iceland has already pulled down the shutters on just under a dozen shops this year.

The Works will close one of its stores in Hitchin town centre on August 25.
