THE price hike for single-use plastic bags, from 5p to 10p, may be fair enough if it helps to protect the environment.

But what better time to get more savvy with your totes and bag some great savings . . .

SIMPLY THE VEST: One of my favourite ever tips from a Sun Saver was about making your own tote from a spare vest or strap top — a clean one, obviously! Just stitch up the bottom and use the straps as handles. Recycling old clothes is also great for the environment, so it’s a win-win.

BAGS OF USE: If you do need to buy a bag, choose one you can use everywhere, again and again. Fabric ones are a good bet but I also like Boots the chemist’s offering — made from recycled plastic water bottles and only £2.

Primark has got some fun Minnie Mouse fabric bags starting from £1.50, while Poundland also sells some nice Disney designs.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER: Coupon queen Holly Smith uses trolley dividers for her supermarket shop, which can be filled in store then placed in your car boot.

A set of four at Lakeland is £22.99 and a similar style at wish.com is £6. But I would just keep cardboard boxes handy — they do exactly the same job.

TROLLY GOOD: Get a great deal on a new shopping trolley. The Hoppa 47L is now down from £15.99 to £13.49 at amazon.co.uk. At Argos the cheapest is £20.

Another option — although perhaps more than you need for your shopping — is to take advantage of the suitcase sales on at the moment. Matalan’s IT Luggage Exceeder range starts at £30, down from the usual £40.

WINE NOT: Fashion retailer Nasty Gal knows picnics will be big this summer and has created a cute wine tote, with the word Rosé emblazoned on it, that carries just one essential bottle. It’s on offer for £5, down from £8, at nastygal.com.

But Lidl may win here. It just launched a wine-cooler handbag featuring a removable 1.5-litre insulated compartment, with a tap on the side, that keeps your drink cool. Yours for £19.99.
