WHERE TO GO: There are lots of free apps and websites to help you discover routes. These include discoveringbritain.org, woodlandtrust.org.uk, ramblers.org.uk and nationaltrust.org.uk.

NEED MOTIVATION? Join The Ramblers to find group walks. Annual membership starts from £36.60 for an individual, and £49 for two adults. Kids can walk for free with parents, grandparents or guardians. See ramblers.org.uk. Or check online to see if there are any local walking groups near you.

SET THE PACE: Download the free NHS Active 10 app on your smartphone to tell you how fast, or slow, you are walking, and for ways to fit in some more brisk exercise.

BOOT UP: Decent hiking boots are a must for serious walking and there are some great deals right now, including men’s and women’s pairs from £16.99 at mandmdirect.com. The site also has Trespass women’s fellwalking shoes for £19.99, saving on the RRP of £42, and Karrimor Men’s Galaxy Sport boots for £24.99, saving £55.
