PARENTS have been warned not to feed their babies certain infant formulas over fears they are contaminated with salmonella.

Manufacturer Abbott has issued an urgent recall for the products which could cause serious illness and have led to the death of a baby in the US.

The formula is prescribed to babies with certain medical conditions

Various batches of Elecare Similac and Alimentum Similac infant formula powder are impacted.

Both products are used for special medical purposes for babies, such as a cows milk allergy, and are usually only available with a prescription.

Salmonella can cause serious food poisoning, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and a fever.

The contaminated batches have already been recalled in the US, where one baby has reportedly died and three others are ill.

Now the UK’s Food Standards Agency has published an urgent recall notice.

“Abbott has taken the precautionary step of recalling various batches of Elecare Similac and Alimentum Similac infant formula powders because they might contain Salmonella,” it said.

Customers should not use the formula and instead return the products to the store or chemist where it was purchased for a full refund.
