Hat-trick hero and all-round livewire Watkins speaks: “When the first one went in a pinched myself a little bit. I’m just delighted I could contribute and we won. Unbelievable [to score a hat-trick]. Before the game you wouldn’t have thought it but after the first one I got a bit of confidence and I should have scored more in the end.

“We saw how high they play and the gameplan was to try and get in behind them. You can see it worked. We fancied ourselves today but I’m not sure we thought the scoreline would be like that.”

From Will Lane:

“Taken in isolation not so much (a pretty dour Watford beat a better, more buoyant Liverpool 3-0 remember), but taken with all other results it is incredible. I totally agree that better defending would make for more intriguing contest, however I do think that ‘lesser’ teams are not necessarily better than such teams in years of old, but adopt better and higher pressing systems and are generally more ambitious (it is worth remembering for example that this is only Wolves’ 3rd season in the PL). Promoted teams are just better and attack more making results like this more likely. Equally, I can see Liverpool winning the corresponding fixture to this 9-3.”
