Shoppers will now need to scan their Asda Rewards app instead of the usual discount card.

The scheme had been due to come to an end this week, but has now been renewed.

The change is coming in tomorrow (May 4) and means that cardholders will keep getting 10% off their shopping in-store.

Previously emergency workers with the special card would have to bring it to the checkout to scan and show their ID, but now they’ll just have to scan the app to get the discount.

Plus, Blue Light shoppers will get a £2.50 bonus if they scan the app for the first time between May 4 and 31.

The cash will hit their cash pots in June.

Asda’s loyalty scheme gives customers the chance to earn pounds, rather than points, each time they purchase certain products or complete a “mission”.

When they earn these pounds, they get added to their cash pots, which they can spend to reduce their grocery bills.

The discount is applicable in all of Asda’s 635 stores across the UK.

It includes food and drink, George at Asda clothing and homewares, toys, gifts and optical.

Mark Baxter, senior director for loyalty at Asda, said: “The Blue Light community do a fantastic job at keeping us all safe, healthy, and supported, so we’re happy to be able to offer them exclusive offers through our popular Asda Rewards app.”

The Blue Light Discount scheme is a nationally recognised scheme that provides a range of discounts to workers in the NHS, emergency services, social care sector and the armed forces.

It can be used across thousands of restaurants, shops and venues.

All in all, there are 15,000 discounts to choose from.

How does Asda’s loyalty scheme work?

To take part in the loyalty scheme, you’ll need to download the Asda Rewards app which you can find on the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

You’ll need to have an account – if you don’t, it’s pretty easy to sign up.

You’ll just need to pop in your name and a couple of other quick details.

Then, you can earn cash rewards known as Asda Pounds when shopping in store and online.

You’ll just need to scan the barcode on the app at the checkout.

If you’re shopping online, just make sure you’re logged into your account, and then browse as normal.

Usually you can buy certain “star products” which are a mix of branded and Asda own-brand items.

You can see a full list in the dedicated section of the Asda Rewards app, but they’re also marked when you’re shopping online at Asda.com.

Just be mindful of how much you’re spending – not every deal will be worth the money you spend to get it and remember to look around other shops to see what deals they have to compare.

Rewards you earn can be accessed in your “cash pot” within the app.
