ASDA is to axe 1,200 jobs at its in-store bakeries under major restructuring plans, according to reports.
The supermarket has begun a consultation with staff after a drop in demand for the freshly bakes loaves, according to The Mirror.
It’s the second round of restructuring plans announced this year.
In February, it said 5,000 jobs were at risk as it looked to meet the increased demand from customers for online shopping.
The supermarket is apparently looking to get its freshly baked goods from a central bakery delivered to stores every day.
This is a move away from having the goods baked and cooked in individual shops, affecting 1,200 jobs.
The supermarket hopes to offer staff affected new roles within the company and will look at redundancy as a last resort.
Asda put the plans down to a drop in demand for traditional bread as shoppers turned to “speciality breads, wraps, bagels and pancakes” for their lunchtime fix.
Derek Lawlor, Asda chief merchandising officer, told The Mirror: “The changes we are proposing will deliver a much better and more consistent bakery offering for customers across all our stores.
“We know these proposed changes will be unsettling for colleagues and our priority is to support them during this process.”
