Asda will allow its head office staff to work where they like – while their frontline colleagues will still go into stores and depots as they have throughout the pandemic.
The supermarket said it will move onto a ‘permanent hybrid working model’ once social distancing restrictions are lifted.
This means 3,500 staff at its Asda House HQ in Leeds and another 500 at George House in Leicester – the home of the George fashion label – will be able to ‘work where it works’.

Bosses said there is no set number of days staff will be expected to work in the office but they should talk to their managers to ‘strike the right balance between home and office working, whilst ensuring this is led by the needs of the business’.
By contrast, the 140,000 staff at its stores and warehouses will still have to go to their place of work to ensure shelves are stocked and customers served – as they have throughout the pandemic.
Jacki Simpson, Asda vice president of people operations, said: ‘We have learned a great deal about working patterns during the last 16 months. We believe this approach will help us attract and retain the best talent and will continue to position Asda as an employer of choice.’
Several firms have offered hybrid working, including Lloyds, Barclays and HSBC Banks, as well as British Gas-owner Centrica.
