AN URGENT warning has been issued to Asda shoppers after the supermarket has forced to recall a food product.

The retailer has taken the product off the shelves due to fears that it could contain dangerous shards of metal.

Consumers are also being warned that 450g bags of Taj Chopped Spinach should be returned to stores immediately.

A statement from the Food Standards Agency said: “Taj Foods is recalling Taj Chopped Spinach because it may contain pieces of metal. The possible presence of metal makes this product unsafe to eat.

“The affected product has only been sold in Asda and Eden Farms.”

The Food Standards Agency added that no other Taj products are being recalled, and that the notice only refers to a specific batch.

The notice only applies to consumers who bought a 450g pack with the best before date of January 2026.

Asda also posted a statement on their website today apologising for the situation.

It read: “If you have purchased Taj chopped spinach, please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Taj foods added that the decision had been made as a step of precaution, and that the possibility the item had metal pieces was “very low”.

The alert did not say how much metal could be in the straws.

However, swallowing any sharp object, like metal, can damage the teeth, mouth and oesophagus (food pipe) and be a choking risk.

If sharp fragments make it further into the body, they can pierce the intestines, which can lead to internal bleeding in severe cases.

High levels of metal poisoning can result in irreversible conditions, like brain damage and kidney and liver failure.

The Food Standards Agency issues alerts if there is a problem with a food product, meaning it should not be sold.

This could be that it has been contaminated with something, such as mould or metal, or it carries an incorrect ‘use by‘ date.

Items are then either withdrawn (taken off the shelves) or recalled (customers are asked to return the product).

People can then get their money back from where they bought the affected items.

This comes just months after Asda was forced to issue an urgent recall of their own-brand juice, and some Calypso juices.

At the time, the Food Standards Agency said that the straws that came with these kids’ drinks may have been contaminated with metal.

The warning applied to six Asda multipack drinks, including 3 x 150ml of orange juice from concentrate, apple juice from concentrate, and essential orange juice from concentrate.

It also included 5x 150ml of apple and blackcurrant juice, apple and mango juice, and apple and pear juice.

Asda also recalled packets of frozen hash browns last month over fears that it could trigger allergic reactions.

The bags of Frozen Crispy Hash Browns were found to be contaminated with Potato Croquettes, which contain milk and wheat (gluten) – neither of which were listed on the packet.

The number of people in the UK living with a food allergy sits at around two million.

A further 600,000 have coeliac disease – a condition where the immune system attacks its own tissues when gluten is eaten.

For allergy sufferers, eating problem foods can spark reactions ranging from sneezing and dizziness to life-threatening anaphylaxis, which blocks the airways.

In serious cases, this can cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure, unconsciousness and even death.

The recall is only for 450g packs of Taj Chopped Spinach with the best before date of Jan 2026
