PLENTY of Brits will be firing up the barbie this bank holiday, but they’d better stock up at Asda and Tesco if they want the best bang-ers for their buck.

That’s because Good Housekeeping announced winners today of its annual BBQ competition, and the top hot-dogs were crowned.

Tesco and Asda had some of the best offerings in the BBQ competition this year

Both the budget supermarkets managed to beat posh rivals like M&S in taste and price, but they also managed to pip budget stores like Aldi to the post too.

Asda managed to win two categories in the taste test.

The budget supermarket came out on top for it’s Extra Special salt and cracked black pepper beef burgers with a score of 77 out of the total 100.

The pack of four costs just £3.30 and the Good Housekeeping team applauded the beef burger’s bold flavours and well-balanced seasoning.

Second place in the beef burger category was another pack of four from British butchers, Farmison.

But the posh runner up costs a staggering £7.65 more to buy, at £10.95 a pack.

Asda won yet another burger category though, when it topped the flavoured beef burger round.

Its Extra Special British beef burger with truffle and parmesan melt is on offer for shoppers at £3.30.

The two burger pack scored an impressive 86/100 in the test, and wowed judges with its “succulent” taste.

And with that, Asda beat M&S by five points, in this round.

The posh supermarket came second place and scored 81/100 for its £4.50 chilli cheese beef burgers.

Elsewhere in the test, Tesco won best meat-free sausages with its Plant Chef Cumberland style bangers.

The £1.75 six pack got one of the highest scores overall, as it won 89 points in total.

The supermarket also beat out well-know meat-free brand THIS Isn’t Pork Sausages, with its £3 six pack alternative.

Budget boss, Aldi, meanwhile, didn’t have any first-place crowns of its own, but its Ashfields Grill garlic and rosemary lamb kebabs came second in the kebab category.

They scored 83/100, and shoppers only have to fork out £2.99 for the luxury of trying them themselves.

As many as 121 products were judged on their looks, smell, taste and texture in the competition.

The taste test looked at products available online and in-stores.

And compared the best of the back-yard grill flavours so shoppers know exactly what to go for this summer.

Angela Trofymova, head of food and drink testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute said: “With summer just around the corner, the Good Housekeeping Institute has been working hard to source the very best BBQ products on the market this season.

“There’s an incredible range of burgers, sausages and added value products in store this year, not to mention an impressive uptick in meat free alternatives. I

“t’s been brilliant to see so many great tasting yet affordable options this year.”

Plenty more brands battled it out in the test too.
