BAKED beans and fish fingers are back on the menu, after experts admitted the items were wrongly demonised.
Blanket warnings about ultra-processed foods mean families have been urged to avoid products such as fruit yoghurt and pasta sauce.
But now the British Nutrition Foundation has launched a campaign to rehabilitate the image of six key staples, which also include sliced bread and wholegrain breakfast cereals.
The decision to classify the items as “healthier processed foods” is likely to lead to a surge in demand at the tills.
But you can save a packet on these essentials with our handy guide.
The Sun on Sunday checked out the prices of six identical brands of baked beans, bread, yoghurt, pasta sauce, frozen fish fingers and dried breakfast cereal with trips to Asda, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Morrisons.
Our research found that Asda delivered the cheapest prices overall, followed closely by Tesco, with Marks & Spencer, unsurprisingly, proving the most expensive.
Below, we reveal the prices per item and totals from our processed food shopping trip.
