Apple’s hotly-anticipated iPhone 15 has just been unveiled, stirring up excitement among gadget fans.

Many will be eager to get their hands on one – but starting from £799, the new tech will cost you a pretty penny.

One in 10 Britons say they would be willing to fork out £799 on the new iPhone 15, according to research from trade-in website Mazuma.

If that sounds too expensive, trading in or selling your existing phone could help to cut the cost.

But how much can you get for an old phone, and where is the best place to sell it?

Apple's iPhone 15 will retail at £799, but if you trade in an old phone you could get anything between £85 and £675 for it - meaning you could bag the new iPhone for as little as £125

Where can you sell a used phone?

There are a number of tech resale companies that will buy your old phone even if they are old or damaged, but you will get less if they are.

Someone could effectively pay as little as £125 for the brand new iPhone 15 if they had an iPhone 14 in optimum condition to trade in, Mazuma said, as this could be worth up to £625. However, an older or damaged model may only sell for £85.

A new launch can cause older models to lose value quickly, so time is of the essence for those looking to get the best price.

Sits where you can sell phones include Music Magpie, We Buy Any Phone, Mazuma and Envirofone. You could also list your old iPhone on eBay or Facebook Marketplace and handle the sale yourself.

How much does an old iPhone or Samsung sell for?

The most popular phones in the UK across all adults are the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and and the iPhone 12 according to You Gov.

We looked at how much you could get it you traded in one of these phones across various sites and retailers.

How much you will get if trading in a phone with one of the trade-in websites will depend on whether your phone is attached to a network or ‘unlocked’, i.e. is not linked to a specific carrier and can be used on any network.

Apple

If buying an iPhone 15 from Apple direct, there is an option to trade in an older iPhone to get money off the iPhone 15.

You could get up to £230 for trading in a 256GB iPhone 12, or if you have a newer model iPhone you could get as much as £460 off the iPhone 15.

We Buy Any Phone

If you were to trade in an iPhone 12 – which was in good condition and still had the box it came in – you would get £337.

A newer iPhone 14 would sell for as much as £541.

Despite its name, the site does not have an option to sell a Samsung Galaxy S10+, but a good condition Samsung Galaxy S23 would get £384 for a trade in.

If you have another old device lying around, We Buy Any Phone will give you an extra £5 on top for a second phone if it is over £50.

MusicMagpie

Music Magpie offers up to £335 for an iPhone 12 if it is unlocked. If the phone is attached to a network you can get between £232 and £255. For an iPhone 14 this goes up to £500.

You could cash in a Samsung Galaxy S10+ for between £89 and £105 depending on weather it is with a network or unlocked.

You can also buy a phone from Music Magpie on Ebay.

Envirofone

Selling an iPhone 12 on Envirofone could get you up to £325 if it is unlocked or £305 if it is with a network. An newer iPhone 14 would get £500, meaning you could get the new iPhone 15 for £299.

You could get up to £75 for a Samsung Galaxy S10+ while the Galaxy S23 could get up to £500.

Envirofone does not have different prices for a locked or an unlocked phone.

Mazuma

Mazuma will give you up to £315 for an iPhone 12 depending on the condition it is in and if it is unlocked. This drops down to £305 if it is attached to a network.

If you were to trade an iPhone 14 Pro Max 128GB unlocked and in excellent condition it would be worth £675 with Mazuma, meaning you could get the iPhone 15 for £125.

A Samsung Galaxy S10+ would fetch up to £95 unlocked and £85 if it is with a network. While the higher end Samsung Galaxy S23 could be worth up to £450 for a trade in if unlocked or £440 with a network.

Ebay and Facebook Marketplace

Online marketplaces Ebay and Facebook Marketplace allow you to list your old phone and decide your asking price.

You might get more for it than you would from a tech resale firm, but it involves more hassle – as you will need to create the listing and find a buyer yourself, as well as paying seller fees.

Unlike selling to a resale website, you will also need to make sure you wipe all your data from the phone yourself.

You need to be very wary of a wave of mobile phone related scams on Facebook marketplace if you are buying a phone there.

Craig Smith, managing director at trade-in website Mazuma says: ‘The high proportion of Britons looking to upgrade their handset this month equates to a significant number of phones becoming unwanted.

‘Rather than letting them gather dust and lose value in the back of a drawer overtime, consumers can get big money by securely trading in their old, unwanted devices. Not only is this beneficial for their wallet, but also the planet, and ensures that all data is erased safely and effectively.’
