ARGOS is ditching the phrase “two-man delivery” after complaints from woke customers that it was sexist.

The retailer, which previously defended the term, will now use the word “people” instead.

One customer had fumed on Twitter: “I noticed in one of your stores your ad was sexist – 2 man delivery. Hopefully moving forward you’ll change this to 2 person delivery.”

Another said: “Can you explain why you put up a ‘2 Man Delivery’ sign in your brand new Lewisham shop?

“Do you only hire men to deliver heavy goods? It’s a very outdated and insensitive phrase.”

Customer Rachel Anderson said she was “shocked” by the phrase and added: “Not very inclusive language.”

The store previously said “man” was used as a non-gender term – similar to “human” – and that it had many female delivery drivers.

But it was “updated” earlier this year. The wording is still on signs but that is expected to change soon. Not all of its customers agree. One wrote: “This is total nonsense.”

Tory MP Nigel Mills added: “Surely there’s bigger things in the world right now to be worrying about. It’s woke madness.”

Frank Furedi, Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent, said there is “pressure on companies to normalise gender neutrality”.

He added: “They think it’s better to be safe rather than use common sense.”

Argos said: “We updated our wording earlier this year to ensure we reflect the diverse communities we serve and colleagues we work with.”
