In an email to subscribers, Spotify said it needed to hike prices to “continue to invest in and innovate our product offerings and features”.

Spotify has also been spending big on podcasts, notably paying an estimated £18million on a deal with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that yielded only 12 episodes and a “holiday special” in 31 months.

The streaming giant – which has more than 236million premium subscribers across the globe – last increased prices in July.

Spotify is giving users one month’s notice of the change.

So the surged price will land in May or June depending on your billing date.

Little-known trick to save money on Spotify Premium

There are a number of ways to save money on your Spotify subscription.

But most of them involve teaming up with other people.

Fortunately there is one little-known trick for individual account holders.

You can buy a Spotify Premium giftcard that provides 12 months of access to the service.

It costs £99, which is cheaper than the £144 you will end up paying over a year once the new subscription costs come into effect.

Check the price before buying – as it may change – and be sure to activate it as soon as possible.

All prices in this article were correct at the time of writing, but may have since changed.

Always do your own research before making any purchase.
