Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced the tougher Tier 4 lockdown for London and parts of the south East of England over fears of rising coronavirus cases in these areas.
A new strain of the killer virus is being blamed for a sudden surge in hospitalisations.
As part of Tier 4 rules, which came into force today (December 20), non-essential shops, hairdressers and beauty salons must shut.
We explain what it means for pubs and restaurants.
Are pubs and restaurants open in Tier 4?
Pubs and restaurants must remain closed for dine-in customers – but they are allowed to serve takeaways.
This means you can order food or drink either for delivery, or by collecting from the restaurant in person, up until 11pm.
Restaurants are also still allowed to keep their drive-thrus open, again until 11pm.
But sadly, it means a dine-in Christmas meal out will be off the menu in Tier 4 areas.
This is because you aren’t allowed to sit inside a restaurant or pub to eat.

Are pubs and restaurants open in Tier 3, 2 and 1?
The rules above also apply to areas following Tier 3 coronavirus rules, meaning pubs and restaurants are open for takeaway, delivery or drive-thru only.
Pub and restaurants in Tier 2 locations are allowed to stay open – but only if they serve alcohol with a “substantial meal”.
That means that punters must order a full breakfast, main lunchtime or evening meal in order to get a drink.
Drinkers will only be able to dine in with people in their bubbles, but can sit outside with people outside their household under the “rule of six”.
They will have to call last orders at 10pm but you’ll still get an hour to finish up drinks and food.
In Tier 1 areas, pub goers will be able to dine in but venues will only be allowed to operate table-service so you can’t order at the bar.
