Apple announced Tuesday its highly anticipated annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held online-only from June 7 to June 11.

The conference, which happens every summer, typically unveils new software updates for the iPhone and Mac, along with a new Watch.

However, this year’s event is rumored to showcase Apple’s AR headset or AR glasses, which is being suggested due to the image shared with Tuesday’s announcement.

The image shows a memoji character with glasses that pictures a reflection of the laptop in the lenses – which could either be an Easter egg or just a coincidence.

Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of worldwide developer relations, said in a press release: ‘We are working to make WWDC21 our biggest and best yet, and are excited to offer Apple developers new tools to support them as they create apps that change the way we live, work, and play.’

Although WWDC is scheduled to last four days, the first day is the one to watch.

This is when CEO Tim Cook will take the stage to share the latest and greatest Apple devices and software to-date.

The other days are designed for developers to participate and learn about software and other technologies.

Although some speculate Apple could announce AR glasses, sources have said the world would not see a pair until 2025 – but such details have been wrong in the past.

The tech giant has not revealed details about the futuristic glasses, but did receive a patent in 2020 describing the device.

The document highlights a technology that would allow Apple Glass users to control the device with their gaze.

While gaze tracking has been described in previous patents, the recent application from Apple offers a different approach to using the technology.

According to Apple, the glasses may also have a touch sensitive surface that users could swipe and tap to control certain aspects.

The firm is also said to be working on a ‘helmet-like’ headset, will provide both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences.

A current prototype weighs about 7-10 ounces – about the weight of a soda can – but the hope is to get that down to about 3-7 ounces, possibly by using a fabric exterior instead of the metal frame used in most of its products.

That would make it far lighter than the Quest 2, which weighs a little over a pound.

Bringing the mixed-reality device, codenamed N301, it to market hasn’t been the smoothest ride.
