MAJOR websites including Amazon, Twitter, Reddit and Spotify have gone down in a mass internet outage.

Problems began around 11am BST (6am ET) on Tuesday, according to online outage tracker DownDetector.

The New York Times, Guardian, Bloomberg and even HMRC websites have also been struck by outages.

Visitors to affected sites are met with a “503 error” message, and are unable load the page. The error message warns of a “connection failure”.

Independent outage tracker DownDetector says that tens of thousands of people worldwide have reported issues with various web pages.

It’s unclear what’s causing the outage, though it’s suspected that the fault lies with Fastly.

The data centre provider, which runs a service designed to speed up loading times for websites, crashed earlier this morning.

On its website, Fastly says that it’s currently investigating the issue, which it calls a “global disruption”.

The San Francisco-based company gave no indication as to when it expected its services to be fully restored.

The Sun has reached out to Fastly for comment.

Others have suggested on social media that the outages may be the result of problems at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS is a cloud computing platform that powers many of the world’s most popular websites, including Amazon.

According to DownDetector, Amazon Web Services has also been hit by an outage this morning.

The Sun has reached out to Amazon for comment.

The disruption has hit hundreds of major websites, including Twitch, Pinterest, eBay, PayPal and the FT.

Visitors to the affected sites took to Twitter to vent their frustration.
