The boss of Google’s parent company has landed a £182 million pay package – as the search engine giant lays off thousands of staff.

The bumper payout, which is large even by US corporate standards, means Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai made more than 800 times what his employees earn on average.

It comes as Alphabet is cutting around 12,000 jobs globally, around 6 per cent of its workforce.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Google employees staged a walkout at the firm’s London offices in a dispute over layoffs.

The bulk of Pichai’s pay came from a huge award of Alphabet’s shares which he receives every three years. Documents also show the company spent £4.8 million on his personal security.

Alphabet and fellow tech giants Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook-owner Meta report first-quarter earnings this week.
