ALDI is making a major change to a household essential at more than 200 stores and shoppers have been left divided.

The budget supermarket is trialling double toilet rolls in a bid to help the environment.

The switch to double rolls has been made in a bid to tackle waste

It means shoppers will get twice as many sheets per roll than they were previously.

If you normally buy a pack of 16 of Aldi’s standard loo rolls, for example, you’ll now be able to pick up a pack of eight double rolls.

You’ll get exactly the same amount of paper but just on fewer rolls.

The change is currently being trialled at 200 of Aldi’s 1,000 stores in the West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire.

The rolls will be available to buy in four, six, eight and twelve packs.

If the trial is successful and rolled out across all stores, the move could see Aldi remove over 60 tonnes of plastic packaging per year.

As more packs will fit into trucks, this will also reduce the number of lorry journeys required.

But not all shoppers are convinced by the change.

Writing in the Aldi UK shoppers Facebook group, one customer asked: “What’s everyone’s thoughts on the new toilet roll packs?

“I’ve got a free standing toilet roll stacker so I think they will fit in it but do they fit on a wall toilet roll dispenser? I left my purchase today as don’t like change.”

Fellow Aldi fans rushed to comment, with one writing: “All toilet roll have got smaller.”

Another social media user replied to the comment, saying: “Cheeky”.

A third added: “New sized loo rolls lol. Who would have thought?”

But some shoppers said the change didn’t bother them.

One wrote: “No issues here.”

While another said: “Sorry, there are more important things to think about than loo rolls.”

It’s understood the unit price per 100 sheets is in line with the existing range.

Aldi isn’t the only supermarket making changes to loo roll.

Asda made a similar move in 2022, doubling the length of its own-brand loo paper, meaning two rolls became the equivalent of four.

Tesco has also announced that it is launching a new range of toilet roll and kitchen towel made from recycled cardboard and pulp.

The supermarket giant said the cardboard will come from home delivery boxes and corrugated card from supermarkets.

It will hit the shelves at 100 Tesco Extra stores across the country in February.

Supermarkets and retailers have made several changes recently in a bid to cut costs and be more environmentally friendly.

Sainsbury’s was the first to announce a change to its mince meat packaging in March last year.

Shoppers now get vacuum-sealed mince even if they order for delivery or click and collect.

But in response, customers slammed the change, complaining that now the meat sticks together in a lump.

Co-op also switched up its beef packaging in May for environmental reasons – and it’s currently rolling out the vacuum-sealed versions across its 2,500 UK stores.

The change affects 11 Co-op meat products altogether.

While Lidl has opted for recyclable vacuum-sealed packaging which uses two thirds less plastic.

Posh shop Waitrose ditched its red, blue and green milk caps over the summer.

More than 300 fruit and veg products no longer have best before dates on them at Marks & Spencer.

And Asda ditched the dates from almost 250 of its fresh fruit and vegetable products in 2022.

How to save money at Aldi

It’s not just dupes that can save you money on your next Aldi shop.

It’s worth keeping an eye out for the retailer’s red stickers on products – staff add them when something has been reduced in price.

But it can catch some shoppers out as most supermarket chains add yellow stickers to reduced items.

Meanwhile, take super saver Tom Church’s advice and shop at the German discounter at 10am on a Wednesday.
