It’s unlikely you’d turn up to an airport to buy a plane ticket on the day – they are far more expensive.

The same goes for parking at the airport too.

Paying on the day you travel costs around £70 more, on average, compared to booking advance.

And in some cases there’s a difference of a whopping £250.

But, it does depend on the airport, according to research by Avanti Travel Insurance.

Heathrow, Gatwick and Edinburgh are the exceptions, with no cost difference at these airports’ official parking areas.

But in seven other areas you’ll pay more to turn up and park at the airport, so avoid it to save money.

James Robinson form the insurance form said: “Driving and parking your own car before you fly is definitely the most convenient and Covid-safe way to travel to the airport, but what about cost?

“At some airports in particular, it can add a sizeable extra cost to your trip.

“The best way to save money on car parking at UK airports is undoubtedly to book online in advance, which can halve your costs. “

An alternative is getting someone you know to give you a lift and drop you off, he adds – but beware that some airports now charge for this so check first.

Meanwhile it’s worth checking prices of all the different airports near your chosen airport.

You don’t have to go with the official provider and you may find cheaper options near by.

Sites such as airparks.co.uk, will show costs and availability, but make sure you use a trusted service and pre-book your parking online in advance to get the best deal. 

You might also get a discount with comparison sites, like SkyParkSecure, Looking4Parking or Holiday Extras instead of going direct.

Check carefully which type of parking you need and book.

Patrick Dever at discount code website Coupon Ninja previously told the Sun: “Be sure to never leave your car in a short-stay car park, or you’ll be hit with a hefty fee.”

Renting a space near the aiport might be a money saver, especially for frequent travellers.

A few websites show driveways and private parking spaces rented out by their owners.

But check your insurance will be valid if leaving on someone else’s drive if something goes wrong, like your car is damaged or stolen.
